A 25-year-old man sent an email Saturday threatening to commit a mass shooting to the Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital in New Lenox, as well as to two dozen other mental health facilities, according to a New Lenox Police Department news release.

About 9:30 a.m., Silver Oaks staff contacted the NLPD about a suspicious email they received from an anonymous source using Gmail.

Police said the sender indicated he couldn’t afford treatment at a mental institution, and he was having homicidal thoughts. The sender said he knew if he were to carry out a mass shooting, then he would be able to get help.

The NLPD officer and the detective division began to investigate, while a Silver Oaks employee maintained email contact with the sender. The person refused to provide his name, location or any other information that might assist in the investigation, according to the release.

After several hours, the detective division discovered the sender of the email was in Richmond, Kentucky. The Richmond Police Department was contacted and provided with the details and findings of the investigation.

Richmond police arrived at the address provided by the NLPD and made contact with a man who admitted to sending the emails, according to the release. The man told Richmond police he felt the only way he could get proper mental health treatment was by committing a mass shooting. He was transported to a mental health facility for evaluation and treatment.

Richmond police said that no weapons were recovered from the man’s home, but ammunition was found. The man said he sent similar threats to about 25 mental health facilities, and Silver Oaks was the only one to reach out to him, according to the release.
